Yester-year Riddle.

Cycling to work today, I recalled a riddle that my Latin teacher (many years ago) gave our class in school, translated, presumably from…well, Latin. I’ve never worked it out, but then, I’m no good at puzzles, nor Latin. So here it is, can you guess?

What disappears at dusk,

then appears at dawn.

Boils when frozen,

and dies when born.

I think your closest alex , a state of something the sun represents.

      • Alex Jones says :

        What disappears at dusk,
The sun can disappear at dusk.

        then appears at dawn.
        The sun appears at dawn.

        Boils when frozen,
Stars begin from cold hydrogen, that collapse under gravity, they then ignite a nuclear fusion at the core.

        and dies when born.
This is a paradox, but suns are in a paradox of collapse and inflation, in constant conflict. The cycle of winter and summer is a death-rebirth cycle.

Brilliant!, I thought it was “Mind”, and the various states it takes, still a guess though and your explanation has more eloquence.

        Cheers, Otove

Yes, only a guess. The wonder of riddles 🙂

    • otove says :

      What disappears at dusk,
we sleep, and dreams replace thought

      then appears at dawn.
      We Wake, Thoughts replace dreams

      Boils when frozen,
We reflect, attention, recognition, love, communication, we grow angry when spurned

      and dies when born.
we are replaced by thoughts and dreams, exist in passion, extinguished in action

Mind is a fair guess 😀
